Provincial and Grassroots Leaders Learn about Climate Change in Thanh Hoa

18:52:0, 27/08/2012 Leaders from provincial, district and commune levels participated in training courses on raising their awareness about climate change which was held in the northern Thanh Hoa province on August 15-16.

“The participants will have better understanding about climate change so they can work as professional advisors for drafting plans on disaster risk reduction for their sectors,” Nguyen Minh Chau, Vice Director of Natural Resources and Environment of Thanh Hoa province made his opening speech. “After the training, they can also work as communicators on the issue at their communities.”

“Climate change is a serious problem for Vietnam, threatening the targets of poverty reduction, the achievement of Millennium Development Goals and the sustainable development of our country. And Thanh Hoa is forecast to be affected by climate change,” the vice director admitted.

Lectured by PhD of Science, Professor Nguyen Duc Ngu, the trainings are among activities under World Vision-implemented Coastal Areas of Thanh Hoa province Resilient to Natural Disasters (CATREND) project.

The CATREND project, which lasts from October 2011 till September 2014, aim to reduce impact of natural disaster under climate change’s effects. The project primary target areas are Hoang Hoa and Quang Xuong districts. In addition, the project will also bring benefit to seven other districts that World Vision implements long-term programmes, namely, Thuong Xuan, Lang Chanh, Cam Thuy, Ba Thuoc, Nhu Xuan, Quan Hoa and Quan Son.
