Nurses, Rapid Response Team Learn First Aid and Rescue Skills in Thanh Hoa

9:8:0, 10/08/2012 More than 200 members of rapid response team and community-based nurses attended a series of training courses on first aid and rescue, which last from June 26 till July 26 in the northern Thanh Hoa province. The courses aimed to improve their capacity in saving victims when natural disasters occur.

Learning both theory and practice, the participants in Hoang Hoa and Quang Xuong districts were equipped with skills and techniques of giving first aid to victims who have difficulties in breathing, have arterial bleeding, have wounds, broken bones or get an electronic shock, transporting them to health station safely and rescue work.

The series of training courses were organised by World Vision’s Coastal Areas of Thanh Hoa Province Resilient to Natural Disaster (CATREND) Project in cooperation with Thanh Hoa Red Cross Association.

Interviewed at the first day of each training course, a half of community-based nurses and 5 per cent of rapid response team members said they knew a little about first aid while no members of the teams understood rescue work thoroughly. After attending the three-day training courses, all of the participants said they had better understanding and obtained practical skills proficiently about the topics.

“The training was very useful and practical for us. It not only provided us with knowledge but also gave us skills to save people during floods and storm in our community,” says Truong Thi Tinh, a village nurse in Hoang Hoa district.

Nguyen Huu Tuan, Chairman of Hoang Hai Commune’s People Committee, shares, “Those who were selected to participate in the trainings must be honored. They should understand their responsibilities and be the pioneers in preventing and mitigating natural disasters in their community. With the equipped skills and techniques, the members will do their work well.”
