Educatiors Learn to Hold Disaster Prevention Activities at Primary Schools

18:56:0, 27/08/2012 Including knowledge of disaster prevention and mitigation into extra-curricular activities at primary schools with an effort to raise students’ awareness about the issues was main topic of two training courses held for official from educational departments in the northern province of Thanh Hoa on July 30 till August 6.

The participants learnt to deliver messages about disaster risk reduction into such activities as news writing, radio broadcasting, children’s clubs, communications corners, competitions, forums, games and simulations. They together prepared knowledge quizzes, arrange plays and re-wrote words for folk songs.

“We’re doing a small work but important for our future. The temperature of our earth is increasing. Our next generation, who are our children and our students need to understand about the problem so as to adapt with climate change,” Hoang Tien Hien, Vide Director of Education and Training Department delivered his opening speech at the training.

The training was organised by World Vision’s Building Resilience through Implementation of Community-based Rish Management (BRICK) Project in cooperation of Thanh Hoa’s Red Cross and Department of Education and Training.

After the trainings, BRICK Project will continue to support the participant to retrain other teachers at their districts.

“We’re tired but happy when participating in the trainings. I’m so glad when others and I jointly compose songs and create games. All participants are so gifted. I really want to come back my community and provide the topics to other teachers,” says Ngo Ngoc Manh, an official from Education and Training Department of Ba Thuoc district.

Funded by Aktion Deutschland Hilft - Germany's Relief Coalition, the project is implemented by World Vision from November 2011 till April 2013. The project aims at strengthening the capacity of disaster prevention and mitigation of local government officials, members of local Red Cross, teachers and school children as well as increase the resilence of most vulnerable villagers.

Apart from BRICK project, World Vision now implements other long-term programmes and short-term projects in nine districts in Thanh Hoa, namely, Cam Thuy, Lang Chanh, Ba Thuoc, Nhu Xuan, Thuong Xuan, Quan Son, Quan Hoa, Hoang Hoa and Quang Xuong.
