Community-based disaster risk assessment training in Thanh Hoa

9:54:19, 10/03/2020 Within the framework of the project "Strengthening resilience to climate change impacts of vulnerable coastal communities in Vietnam" funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) through UNDP, Disaster Prevention Policy and Technology Center organized two training courses on community-based management and assessment of natural disaster and climate risks in Hoang Yen and Hoang Ngoc communes, Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province, from April 22-27, 2019.

The training course aimed at strengthening the capacity of commune officials   on management and assessment of community-based natural disaster and climate risks with integrated content of safe houses, mangroves before natural disasters , thereby developing a Community-based Disaster Prevention Plan in accordance with the Disaster Prevention Law.
The class was attended by participants who are members of the Commune Technical Support Group (including representatives of the Commune People's Committee, officials of the Office: Land Administration, Culture, Red Cross Association, Women Union, Youth Union, school representatives) and Community groups (including Village Heads and representatives of some mass organizations). Participants and residents participating in the training and assessment were selected to ensure gender equality (at least 30% female).

At the training course, trainees were provided with general knowledge about community-based disaster risk management and practicing community-based disaster risk assessment tools. After the village / village cluster assessment process, the participants discussed and developed a Commune Disaster Risk Assessment Report, which is the basis for the preparation of a Disaster Prevention Plan and commune disaster response plan.

The training course has received the enthusiastic participation of students and the people, especially the active support of local authorities in Hoang Yen and Hoang Ngoc communes. 02 training courses have trained 60 trainees who are members of the Commune and Community Technical Assistance Groups, mobilizing 240 people to participate in the process of evaluating and verifying information on disaster risk assessment.
