Heavy rains cause landslides in southeastern Switzerland.
Two people have died and one is missing after heavy rains triggered landslides in southeastern Switzerland, police said on Friday.
Severe storms and heavy rains hit Switzerland this weekend, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate in the west after the Rhone River and its tributaries burst their banks.
Rescuers found two bodies in the Fontana region. The La Regione daily reported that the victims were two women who were on holiday in the area.
Emergency services were trying to evacuate 300 people attending a football tournament in Peccia, while nearly 70 others were being evacuated from a holiday camp in the village of Mogno.
Police said earlier that the bad weather had made rescue efforts particularly difficult due to the inaccessibility of some valleys and the power grid being cut off. The federal warning system also confirmed that parts of the canton of Ticino were without running water.
In the western Swiss canton of Valais, the civil security agency said authorities evacuated hundreds of people and closed roads after the Rhone River overflowed in some areas. Heavy rains also hit southeastern Switzerland over the weekend, killing one person and causing extensive property damage./.
