The Prime Minister issued a directive on implementation of urgent measures to cope with salinity intrusion in the Mekong Delta

15:55:45, 13/06/2016 For the Mekong Delta region, the current drought and salinity intrusion are considered the most serious in nearly a century. To deal with the issue, the Prime Minister recently issued a directive on implementation of urgent measures to cope with salinisation in the Mekong Delta, which requires local authorities to deploy appropriate measures.

These include installing water plumbing systems and providing mobile tankers with fresh water for locals, aimed at ensuring freshwater resources for the daily activities of hospitals, health facilities, schools, and households and to prevent disease outbreaks.

In the long run the natural resources and environment sector needs to implement long-term solutions for the whole region, such as facilitating investigation and planning of water resources, especially underground water, thereby helping local authorities in shaping water supply construction works.
Relevant authorities also need to create favourable conditions for organisations and individuals to pour investment in the construction of water supply facilities and providing services in accordance with a legal framework to ensure sustainable exploitation and development of water resources.

Localities in plains and coastal areas, especially the Mekong Delta, should actively plant and protect mangroves and sand forests, in addition to building water storage facilities to protect water resources and cope with change climate and sea level rise.
The participation of the whole political system, institutions, businesses, scientists, and individuals with practical solutions for water saving and effective water use is also vital to the issue in the long term, while ensuring increased green growth and sustainable development for the nation in the future.
