India committed to combating climate change

12:51:0, 30/11/2011 The Energy and Resources Institute's Arabinda Mishra says 16 out of the 28 Indian states have climate change action plans in place. Mishra was presenting the findings of a recent study at the COP 17 United Nations conference on climate change in Durban. India has committed itself to reducing its carbon emissions by up to 25 % by 2020.

Speaking on India’s effect to combat climate change Mishra says: "Gujerat for example, which is on the west coast of India, has been proactive in identifying measures related to climate change. In fact it is the only state to set up a department of climate change. There is a strong emphasis on harnessing solar energy. Maharashtra is another state. They have again pioneered a process by which we are coming out with a state wide vulnerability assessment, what's going to happen to surplice temperature to rainfall pattern. West Bengal is thinking of setting up a climate research institute."

Most rural communities in India do not understand "climate change" or "carbon emissions"

Meanwhile Usha Nair of the All India Womens Conference, which was also present at the discussions says most rural communities in India do not understand complicated terms such as "climate change" or "carbon emissions".

Nair says: “What we do is we relate their activities with what is happening around them. Like there is drought, there is floods and shortage of food. And then we tell them how some of their actions are leading to this kind of a scenario, where rains don’t come in time or if it rains, it just rains endlessly. So without using all these high sounding terminologies we try to tell them how they can be helpful in mitigating the carbon emissions.”
